On Wednesday 5th June, 2024, Siâna, Nyokabi, Michele and Maya attended Kenya's first Joint Scientific Conference. It was an important day as we were also commemorating World Environment Day.
The girls attended a lecture by a leading geologist, Prof. Daniel Olago who taught that Kenya's biodiversity is very important for the economic success of Kenya. They also learnt that some lakes in modern Kenya were formed over 780,000 years ago and that some lakes will eventually disappear due to climate change and normal tectonic activity!
The young scientists visited various exhibits and learnt about useful insects and bugs, like bees and experienced cocoons spun by silk worms and understanding how silk is eventually woven into scarves and other furnishings. They learnt about foods grown organically (without chemicals) and Siana was brave enough to try some bitter but healthy millet porridge.
It was interesting to learn about Kenya being home to some UNESCO World Heritage Sites and understanding the responsibility we all have in conservation of the environment, protection of heritage sites, wildlife and endangered species.
