Overview
INTRODUCTION
The Doctor of Philosophy (Meteorology) programme is an advanced level program aimed at
offering students an opportunity to carry out research and come up with new knowledge in
the application of the science of Meteorology and related disciplines and fields. Some of the
application areas include bio-meteorology, marine meteorology, hydro-meteorology, agro-
meteorology, aeronautical meteorology, renewable energy resources, environmental
meteorology, environmental pollution, environmental impacts assessment, economic
commercial meteorology, forensic meteorology, and urban and building climatology.
PHILOSOPHY
There is the growing need to provide solutions to the ever-emerging challenges posed by
weather and climate. In order to do so there is need to acquire advanced knowledge and
research skills at doctorate level in Meteorology. Meteorology provides the foundation on
which the applied fields such as Agrometeorology, Aviation Meteorology, and Climate
Change Science are anchored. Kenya Vision 2030, the country’s development blueprint
covering the period 2008 to 2030, aims to transform Kenya into a newly industrializing,
“middle-income" economy providing a high-quality life to all its citizens by the year 2030.
RATIONALE
Weather and climate influence economic, social and political pillars of Kenya Vision 2030.
Therefore, training of high-level human resource in Meteorology is crucial. The PhD
programme in Meteorology seeks to contribute to the national and global initiatives of
responding to weather and climate change effects through capacity building in acquisition
advanced knowledge and research in meteorology. The PhD programme in Meteorology is
designed to provide students with advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in
Meteorology and it application weather and climate related issue. The programme is
designed to meet the needs of those graduates' seeking careers in the fields such as
Weather prediction, Climate Change Science, Climate Modeling, Agrometeorology,
Hydrometeorology, Atmospheric Pollution and Physical Oceanography.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the programme shall be to impart students with advanced knowledge in
meteorology and develop competences in the applications of meteorology, and skills to
conduct advanced research in meteorology and disseminate research findings.
MODE OF DELIVERY
There are three modes of delivery in this programme namely.
- Module I - this has a face-to-face delivery and is done from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
- Module II - this has a face-to-face delivery and is done from 5.30pm to 8.3pm, Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 5pm on Saturday.
- Module III - this has an open and distance learning mode where modules are given to students to read/study.

Structure
- The programme shall last for a minimum period of eighteen (18) months and a maximum of five (5) years.
- The programme shall be offered by course work, examinations and thesis.
- The course work shall be conducted through lectures, discussion groups, practicals, seminars and assignments
- Continuous assessment shall comprise tests, assignments, practicals, field work and term papers.
- The candidate shall be required to take at least four (4) taught course units except where exemption has been permitted.
- The candidate shall be required to take 3 core course units and at least 1 electives.
- The taught courses shall be covered in a minimum of one semester and a maximum of two (2) semesters each of fifteen (15) weeks.
- Candidates shall be required to take at least two (2) course units in each semester.
- A candidate shall be required to write a thesis equivalent to 16 units. The thesis must target a specific area of application of Meteorology.
- The School/ Department may require the candidate to attend such a course or courses as may be considered appropriate.
Admission Requirements
ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
The common regulations for the Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) in the University of Nairobi shall apply.
(a) Holders of a Master of Science degree in Meteorology, Agrometeorology, Aviation Meteorology, Hydrology, Climate Change of the University of Nairobi.
(b) Holders of a Master of Science degree in Meteorology, Agrometeorology, Aviation Meteorology, Hydrology, Climate Change or equivalent qualification from a University recognized by Senate.
(c) Candidates will be required to draw and submit a detailed Doctoral research proposal in the prescribed manner at the time of applying for admission.
