Overview
INTRODUCTION
The Master of Science (Meteorology) programme is an advanced level program aimed at imparting knowledge and skills in the application of the science of Meteorology and research capacity in related fields. Some of the application areas include bio-meteorology; marine meteorology; hydro-meteorology; agro-meteorology; aeronautical meteorology; renewable energy resources; environmental meteorology; environmental pollution; environmental impacts assessment; economic commercial meteorology; forensic meteorology; and urban and building climatology.
PHILOSOPHY OF THE PROGRAMME
Weather and climate influence socio-economic wellbeing of a society. Favourable weather and climate conditions determine the socio-economic status and livelihood of any nation. It is in record that hazards arising from extreme climate and weather have beguiled humankind since time immemorial. The adverse effects of these hazards may be minimized through understanding, monitoring and predicting their evolution.
RATIONALE
The socio-economic development of nations, especially in the developing world, is largely driven by the prevailing weather and climate. Factoring of the knowledge of weather and climate information is essential in operational and strategic planning processes of many sectors of the economy of a nation. Besides, most natural disasters the world over are triggered and/or exacerbated by weather and climate extremes. Meteorology is a highly specialized field that requires a unique training approach. The MSc in Meteorology programme is intended to train experts that can provide current and expected weather/climate information for economic planning and development, and for safeguarding life and property. The MSc (Meteorology) degree program has been revised in accordance with the WMO and CUE guidelines. The programme embraces new developments, emerging knowledge and research challenges in the science of Meteorology including areas of socio-economic planning and development. This programme is particularly relevant and applicable in view of the Kenya Vision 2030 outlook, the UN Strategic Development Goals and the UN framework for Climate Change convention.
OBJECTIVES
The Master of Science in Meteorology programme aims to equip students with skills, knowledge and competencies in the science of meteorology and its applications. Specifically, the programme seeks to:-
- Provide students, having a background in Meteorology, with advanced theoretical and applied knowledge in Meteorology.
- Equip the students with tools necessary for them to work in operational, research and training institutions.
- Expose the students to areas of current research and applied meteorological interests.
MODE OF DELIVERY
There are three modes of delivery in this programme namely;
- Module I - this has a face-to-face delivery and is done from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
- Module III - this has an open and distance learning mode where modules are given to students to read/study.

Blended that combines face to face and online. The online mode of delivery consists of comprehensive coverage of the syllabus through lectures, assignments, quizzes, tutorials, practicals, seminars, workshops using online learning platforms like eclass, SOMAS, Mitihani , Microsoft teams,Google meet, Zoom, Big blue button, the Student Management Information System (SMIS), University of Nairobi Learning Management Systems.

Structure
COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION
- The course consists of 6 core units, 6 electives and a research project.
- The minimum duration of the course shall be four semesters and a maximum of twelve semesters each of 15 weeks.
- A course unit shall be defined as consisting of 45 contact hours of lectures, tutorials and practicals.
- Candidates shall be required to take at least 3 course units and a maximum of 6 course units in a semester.
- The candidate shall take 6 core units, 6 electives and a research project in meteorology.
Admission Requirements
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The common regulations governing the Masters Degree programmes in all faculties, institutes and schools shall apply.
Holders of any of the following:
- A degree of the University of Nairobi of at least upper second in Meteorology or an equivalent qualification from any other institution recognised by the Senate.
- A lower second class degree of the University of Nairobi in Meteorology or an equivalent qualification from any other institution recognised by the Senate plus at least two years relevant research/work experience.
- A pass degree of the University of Nairobi in Meteorology or an equivalent qualification from any other institution recognised by the Senate, with a working experience of at least five years in a relevant research/ operational institution.
- A degree of the University of Nairobi in any science based discipline or an equivalent qualification from any other institution recognised by the Senate, plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Meteorology

TRANSFER OF CREDITS
A candidate may be exempted from some course units and credits transferred from institutions recognised by Senate, subject to the following conditions:
- Must have passed in similar course units at Masters level.
- Request for exemption should be made in writing, on admission, addressed through the Dean of the Faculty of Science, to the Director of Board of Postgraduate Studies, and must be accompanied by officially endorsed supporting documents including the institutions syllabuses for the relevant courses.
- Payment of appropriate exemption fees.
- No candidate shall be exempted from more that one third of the total number of units required in the course.

Graduates of MSc (Meteorology) may work in any of the following:-
- Meteorological training and research institutes;
- Climate prediction and applications centres;
- Departments and agencies that provide meteorological information and services at national and regional levels;
- Global and regional climate producing centres;
- Firms concerned with energy generation;
- Organizations concerned with food systems and agriculture;
- Firms, companies and institutions that deal with large data;
- Government ministries;
- Firms, institutions and organizations concerned with climate, climate change and their applications.
