Juan Manuel García Ruiz (http://garciaruiz.com/JuanMa.html) is Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), founder and director of the Laboratory of Crystallographic Studies –LEC (http://www.lec.csic.es) of the Andalusian Institute of Earth Sciences (CSIC-University of Granada). Garcia-Ruiz is an international expert in nucleation and crystal growth, from inorganic and pharmaceutical compounds to minerals and proteins, highlighting his studies on the formation of giant crystals and the crystallization of drugs and proteins in gels and microgravity. He has been chairman of several space crystallization missions, coordinating more than 30 European and Japanese laboratories. He recently received one of the prestigious grants from the European Research Commission to conduct studies on mineral self-organization on the primitive Earth, a project with which he has explored the soda lakes of the Rift Valley. He is the founder and director of the series of international schools, "Granada International School of Crystallization," hold in Granada every last week of May. Juanma García-Ruiz is a cultural agitator and a scientist committed to promoting a civic culture based on science. About his expeditions, the German illustrator Till Lukat has created the comic “Something in the water” and has been translated into several languages. In 2022, he received the Waltrude and Friedrich Liebau Prize for promoting interdisciplinary crystallography from the German Crystallographic Society and in 2023, the Elizabeth Wood Prize from the American Society of Crystallography.
