DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN GEOLOGY

Overview

Philosophy

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Geology is to provide qualifying students with an in-depth understanding and integrated knowledge of advanced applicable theory in the field of geology. A Ph.D. in Geology is a pure science-based research study that requires candidates to demonstrate high-level research capability and make a significant and original academic contribution nationally and internationally at the frontiers of the discipline of specialization.

Rationale 

Original research work that impacts national and international dissemination in publications with scientific revision in the field of geology cutting across the academic, technological, social and cultural progress. 

Objectives 

i. Equip the student with knowledge of carrying out original research work that deserves national and international dissemination in publications. 

ii.Enhance the ability of the student to engage in research that are designed to encourage critical thinking and analysis to geological problems

 iii.  Equip the students with the ability  to formulate testable hypotheses, collect data to test them, and publish their results. 

Course Duration 

The course shall be covered in a minimum of six (6) semesters equivalent to two (2) academic years and maximum of twelve (12) semesters of 15 weeks each.

 

 

Mode of Delivery

Face-to-Face

The face-to-face mode of delivery is given to students admitted in the full time program and shall consist of seminars, workshops and consultations with supervisors
 

Blended

This mode combines the face to face leaning and online learning delivery methods.

Currently due to Covid 19 containment measures, all programmes are offered online through various Learning Management Platforms approved by the University of Nairobi Senate.

Course Structure 

The candidate shall undertake a mandatory research and thesis in any of the following areas.

  1. Mineralogy and Petrology
  2. Economic Geology and Mineral Resources
  3. Environmental Geology and Management
  4. Engineering Geology
  5. Hydrogeology and Groundwater Resource Management
  6. Petroleum Geology
  7. Marine Geology and Resources
  8. Applied Geochemistry
  9. Applied Geophysics
  10. Seismology
  11. Palynology and Micropalaentology
  12. Mineral Exploration

The course shall be evaluated by grading of thesis followed by oral defense of the same.

The Common Regulations for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the University of Nairobi and in the School of Physical Sciences shall apply.

The following shall be eligible for admission:

A holder of a Master’s Degree in Geology, or its equivalent from the University of Nairobi or any other institution recognized by Senate.
