Weather Balloon Launch Event on 1st March 2024 at KMD headquarters in Nairobi - RIFT JET Project

The Turkana Jet is an equatorial low-level jet forming in East Africa carrying moisture from the Indian Ocean. Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) officers working out of Marsabit, North West Kenya, were the first to identify these winds. The winds form in the Turkana Channel, between the Ethiopian Highlands to the northeast and Kenya Highlands to the southwest.

 

AFAS Stakeholder Workshop 2023: Uniting Forces for Climate Change and Biodiversity Solutions in African Savannas

On the 14th of December 2023, the Mövenpick Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, played host to the AFAS Stakeholder Workshop. Under the theme "Achieving Profitable Nature-based Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation and Biodiversity Conservation," the workshop aimed to unite policy makers, businesses, NGOs, and scientists involved in Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for climate change adaptation and biodiversity protection in East African savanna regions.

EU Commissioner H.E Wopke Hoekstra Calls for International Cooperation to Tackle Climate Crisis

In preparation for the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), European Commissioner for Climate Action, Wopke Hoekstra, visited Kenya on November 6 and 7 to highlight the country's critical role as a strategic African partner in combating climate change. The commissioner's visit underscores the importance of Kenya's leadership and participation in achieving the goals of COP28.

ONLINE TRAININGS OF ICT SERVICES FOR 1ST YEAR STUDENTS 2023/2024 ACADEMIC YEAR

The University of Nairobi's ICT center has lined up a one week online training for first year students. The training which will start on 2nd October 2023 to 6th October 2023 and is aimed at equipping students with skills on various online learning tools and other ICT services which are offered in the University of Nairobi.

OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF UON'S WANGARI MAATHAI INSTITUTE EMPHASIZES CLIMATE ACTION AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH

In a significant event, Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya inaugurated the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi's Upper Kabete Campus. The institute, named after the renowned Nobel Peace Laureate Prof. Wangari Maathai, is poised to collaborate closely with the government to tackle climate change-related challenges and resource conflicts in Kenya and the wider region.

 

"Adapting to Shifts: Exploring IPCC's 7th Assessment Cycle (AR7)"

The commendation for the University of Nairobi's substantial contribution to tackling climate change, showcased through its provision of experts, research endeavors, and outstanding academic institutions, was underscored once again. This acknowledgment was reaffirmed during the unveiling of the 7th Assessment Cycle (AR7) by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on August 11, 2023. The occasion was organized through a partnership between the Ministry of Environment and the Meteorological Department.

The University of Nairobi proudly announces the exceptional achievement of Dr. Cromwel Lukorito, a distinguished Senior Lecturer in the Department of Earth and Climate Sciences, who has been selected as the Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II. This prestigious appointment was officially confirmed on June 28, 2023, marking a momentous recognition of Dr. Lukorito's expertise and outstanding contributions to the field of climate science.

Responding to Climate Change in the Region through Land Governance:2nd Regional Research Conference

The 2023 second Regional Research Conference was held at the Kenya School of Government, Nairobi on Wednesday 24th-25th 2023. The Conference under the theme “Responding to Climate change through Land Governance in the region” brought together scholars and researchers from the region to discuss the pertinent issues affecting climate change and make policy recommendations to mitigate and adapt to Climate change through Land use.
