The Department of Earth and Climate Sciences wishes to put out a PhD Call - UoN PhD Programme in Climate Change and Adaptation funded by Danida ENHANCE.  

The project title "Climate influence on zoonoses at human-livestock-wildlife interfaces in the transboundary region between Kenya and Tanzania (ENHANCE) ".   

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply.

The Call opens from today February 5, 2025 and closes on February 28, 2025.

About The Conference

The year 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the implementation of the International Conference on Population and Development Programme of Action (ICPD-POA). Kenya, through the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD), has been implementing various population policies and programs for over 40 years.

The University of Nairobi, through the Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation (ICCA), is at the forefront of research aimed at addressing water security challenges in Africa. Led by Prof. Daniel Olago, ICCA is collaborating with the University of Oxford's REACH program to develop sustainable water management solutions for millions of people in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

We are offering 2 PhD and 2 Postdoc positions with a focus on climate change attribution, vulnerability, and health commencing on the 1st of February 2025.

Project description

The African Climate and Environment Center – Future African Savannas (AFAS) Annual Stakeholder Workshop, held on November 18, 2024, in Nairobi, convened a diverse range of participants from academia, policy, industry, and civil society. With the theme "Transferring Science into Practice," the event emphasized the urgent need to convert research into actionable strategies for climate adaptation and biodiversity conservation in Africa's savanna ecosystems.

The REACH Programme, a collaborative effort between the University of Nairobi and the University of Oxford, has played a critical role in tackling water insecurity in Kenya's drylands, particularly in Turkana County. This initiative, spearheaded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, aims to enhance water security for over 10 million people in Africa and Asia by delivering world-class science that transforms policy and practice.

Background:  Water ESSENCE -  creating synergy to meet the global challenges is a NORHED project funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).  The aim of the program is to strengthen the capacity of higher education institutions in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) to educate more and better-qualified candidates and to increase the quality and quantity of research conducted by the countries' own researchers.
